The work constitutes a documented tour in search of the oldest social structures of Mexico, to trace the processes of formation of the tolteca, chichimeca and mexica states. The first part is purely archaeological: the social division into sedentary and hunter-gatherer farmers on the one hand and into manufacturing intellectuals on the other, leading to the formation of the Teotihuacan state. In the second, more ethnohistorical part, the author traces the regional centers of power until the militarized señoríos of the Toltec colonization reconquer the basin of Mexico and surrounding valleys, giving rise to the emergence of several states that will dispute the hegemony.
