Ricard's brilliant portrayal of the methods employed to found and organize the church in New Spain brings into focus the profound revolution in Mexican life that took place in the all important sixteenth century. He begins his account with the arrival of the first mission in 1524, just five years after Cortes landed on Mexican soil, and concludes in 1572, the year when the Jesuits arrived to initiate a new period of religious history and supplant the established Orders.
