Two of the questions of the author that have frequently occurred during his investigations are: were the Indian slaves of the Spaniards emancipated in fact, and, if so, what disposition was made of the freedmen? With these questions in mind the author had been accumulating such fragments of material as he could find, in an attempt to answer them, but it was not until Dr Sanford Mosk, of the University of California, brought back extraordinary finds from the Archives of the Indies at Seville that sufficient evidence was available for the author to piece together a credible story.
