Bernardino Biondelli was a prominent 19th-century Italian scholar who made foundational contributions to comparative linguistics, dialectology, archaeology, and numismatics. He is best remembered for his pioneering scientific study of Italian dialects, anticipating several key insights later formalized by the famous linguist Graziadio Isaia Ascoli. After working as an educator across the Veneto region, Biondelli moved to Milan in 1839. There, he took over as the curator of the prestigious Gabinett Numismatich Braidense (Braidense Numismatic Cabinet) from 1849 to 1883 and later served as a professor of archaeology. His extensive academic legacy spans the detailed study of Northern Italian dialects, the history of Milanese coinage, and deep-dive research into early Mesoamerican civilisations, including the compilation of an Aztec-Latin lexicon.
