A Bibliography of the Periodical Works of Charles Dickens, Bibliographical, Analytical and Statistical
Author: Thomas Hatton and Arthur H. Cleaver
Year: 1933
Publisher: Chapman & Hall, Ltd
Place: London
Description:
xxii+384 pages with frontispiece and thirty additional illustrations and facsimiles and tables. Quarto (10 1/4" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine facsimile signature to front cover. First edition limited to 750 copies.
When the authors decided upon the production of this work, it was agreed that it should contain every bibliographical detail known to them, relating to the first issue o the first editions of thirteen important books written by Charles Dickens, and published in periodical form. The object was to present these details in such a manner that the student, as well as the experienced collector, might have a standard book of reference, which could be relied upon to put an end to the uncertainty still associated with the expression -- "original parts as issued." The authors examined the collection housed in the John F Dexter library, where confirmation of the material was to be found. The magnitude of the material contained in the thirteen works, may surprise those not well versed in the subject. The wrappers, which clothe the monthly parts of the various issues, are a striking feature of the finished production. The authors examined over 13,800 physical formats in assembling this work. The various states are examined and commented on. In all probably one of the most through productions of bibliographic work on Dickensiana.
Condition:
Corners bumped, light edge wear, some light discoloration to back board else a very good copy lacking jacket.
