The Jesus Incident is a 1079 science fiction novel co-written by Dune author Frank Herbert and poet Bill Ransom. Originally published in May 1979, it serves as a sequel to Herbert's 1965 novel Destination: Void and marks the first entry in the Pandora Sequence trilogy. The story picks up thousands of years after the events of Destination: Void. The conscious artificial intelligence created by humans, now known simply as Ship, has achieved godlike omnipotence. Ship transports the remaining multi-cultural human crew to a hostile, poisonous planet called Pandora.
Pandora is an incredibly deadly world inhabited by lethal native fauna—such as nerve-runners and airborne jellyfish—alongside a massive, sentient ocean kelp. Ship demands that humanity discover how to achieve "WorShip" (true, meaningful communication and respect) or face total extinction. To push this experiment along, Ship awakens Raja Lon Flattery, a chaplain-psychiatrist from hibernation, to witness and guide humanity's struggle against both the planet and their own destructive nature. Meanwhile, human leaders and scientists split into factions, abusing cloning technologies and attempting to wage war against the planet's ecology.
