This volume sets out to be in effect two books in one, an examination of cult in general, and a report of the excavation of a particular shrine at Phylakopi on  Melos with a consideration of its significance. The prehistoric town of Phylakopi was the scene of one of the pioneering excavations sponsored by the British School at Athens at the end of the last century. For its day it was a careful undertaking, well conducted and published in some detail. For its day it was a careful undertaking, well conducted and published in some detail. The report of the findings still remains basic to any study of the prehistory of the Cyclades. Then in 1911, a further dig was mounted with the purpose of checking the stratigraphy, this was so summarily reported as to have little value. So, it reexamination of the town with up-to-date methods was overdue and in 1974 Renfrew undertook this task under the continuing sponsorship of the British School at Athens. The discovery of the two interconnected shrines, here published separately from the rest, was one of the outcomes of four season's excavation.
