xvi+83 pages of text with Frontispiece plate and 24 additional plates of sand paintings and illustrations in text. Folio (13½ x 10¼") bound in original quarter leather with blind stamped in red labels and cloth cover boards with gilt decorated paper. Limited to 500 copies  with plates on handmade Japanese paper and printed by the William Byrd Press. 

The striking plates are printed on imported handmade Japanese paper and depict detailed reproductions of the sandpaintings by Miguelito. These sandpaintings accompany his chants, including Bead Chant and Shooting Chant, two of the most important Navajo rites. Also includes a thorough description and explanation of these rites and the legends associated with them.

Condition: Leather worn and stained, spine tips chipped, joints starting, larges portions of cover paper missing; first few leaves detached including frontispiece, front hinge starting, sticker on rear pastedown; an occasional blindstamped institution mark, lacks original slipcase else externally fair, internally very good.
