The research work developed by Belmar began in 1890 with the publication of his first linguistic work, a primer with rudiments for learning Zapotec. A year later he would incorporate the philological study of colonial sources from which he would edit the Art of the Mixe language by Agustín Quintana and the Grammar of the Zapotec-Serrana and Zapotec Valley languages , written by Friar Gaspar de los Reyes. Among the languages that were described by Belmar are Amuzgo , Chatino , Chocholteco , Chontal , Cuicateco , Huave , Mazatec , Mixe , Papabuco , Triqui and Zapotec . From 1902 he was received as a member of the Philological Society of Paris. In 1905 he published Mixtec-Zapotec family and their relations with the Otomi.
