The Atlas contains 462 place glyphs, most of of which are from Codex Mendoza. The text, which is not included, provides etymology of the place names and analysis of the forms of the glyphs.

Antonio Peñafiel (1831-1922) was Director General of the Census Department of Mexico; Member and Founder of the Mexican Society of Natural History; Member of the Academy of Medicine of Mexico; Member of the Geographical and Statistical Society; Member of the Texcoco Nahuatl Society; Member of the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia and the Antiquarian Society of Worcester, Mass. He was also the author of several seminal works in Mexican archaeological and philological studies.

Condition:

Provenance former library copy of the Dumbarton Oaks collection, with their stamp to front end paper and gifted from Robert Wood Bliss with his book plate to front pastedown. Some wear to the extremities else a very good copy.
