This work by John Barrow briefly covers the search for a Northwest passage from the beginning, but picks up with more in depth review when John Ross in the Isabella and Alexander begin their expedition. It continues with Captain David Buchan in 1818 and follows with Parry's first voyage in the Hecla and Griper in 1819-20. This follows with a voyage to Spitzbergen by D C Clavering to experiment to determine the figure of the earth by means of the pendulum vibrating in different latitudes in 1822-23. The essay then returns to Commander Parry's voyages with a discussion Captain George Lyon's exploits in the Griper. This is followed by a discussion on John Franklin and Richardson in 1819-1827 covering the first two voyages of Franklin. Captain Backs land journey and his sea expedition is presented here bringing the exploration of the arctic up to 1837.
Spine ends chipped, corners rubbed and bumped, internal foxing and light stains else a good to very good copy.
